Bio
Sonny Kenn is known by fans and musicians alike as a legendary singer and guitar player at the Jersey Shore. (google Sonny Kenn for more info) While Sonny was tearing the roof off clubs at night, he was attending college at Mercer County and Trenton State by day as a Fine Arts major where Sonny appreciated the artistic guidance of Mel Leipzig.

“The more serious I got about playing guitar, the more I got into painting…to me it’s the same creative impulse as writing a song.” Sonny can wax eloquent on Muddy Waters or Michelangelo; Leonardo or Link Wray. “You never know where inspiration will come from…you hunt for that perfect thing and you analyze your instincts to see if they hold up.” These ideas are represented by some of Sonny’s paintings that incorporate 12 tone musical and color scales. The paintings can be both viewed and listened to.

Blue’s has been long called the ‘Devil’s Music.’ A drink is spilled on a table where the Bluesman has placed his tools. Break time, but what has happened? Has the Devil intervened or has he seen the light?

As matter pops into existence from the quantum chaos, musical notes pop into existence from the chaos of noise. The musical notes are represented by the 12 tone chromatic scale. The 3 primary colors (red, yellow, blue) can be divided into secondary and tertiary colors also creating a 12 tone color scale. The artist has superimposed these scales giving the colors a musical designation. Red represents the first step of the scale.Yellow is the third step. The fifth step of the scale is blue/green. These three colors can produce a musical triad (do, me, so) when played on an instrument. The whole painting can be played as a sort of musical expression.

            Title:           Birth of Venus

            Size:            H 48″ x W 30″

Medium:   Oil on Canvas. Also available as Limited Edition Giclee on Canvas.

           Edition:     200

A magical paint can suspended in midair with paint pouring out hitting the drop cloth forming a new perfect beauty. As in Cabanel’s famous painting, Venus, the Goddess of love, after being born is rolling ashore on a wave. Our Venus here is born on a wave of cloth with the sole purpose of creating beautiful music.

            Title:           Slide Show

            Size:            H 30″ x W 24″

Medium:   Oil on Canvas. Also available as Limited Edition Giclee on Canvas.

           Edition:     200

These are the various slides that Sonny has used to play slide guitar (glass, brass, steel, tubing, bottle necks and sockets) set up on a bar stool with pieces of acoustical foam as the backdrop. The arrangement of slides seems to suggest actors on a stage, hence the name, “Slide Show.”

            Title:           Take Your Pick

            Size:            H 18″ x W 24″

Medium:   Oil on Canvas. Also available as Limited Edition Giclee on Canvas.

           Edition:     200

The artist carries around in his pocket, a pouch filled with various guitar picks. One day he threw the pouch on a pine table and the picks spilled out. After seeing the accidental composition, he rearranged some of the picks then sketched what he saw. This eventually led to the painting, “Take Your Pick.”

            Title:           Feedback Monsters

            Size:            H 30″ x W 24″

Medium:   Oil on Canvas. Also available as Limited Edition Giclee on Canvas.

           Edition:     200

As many guitarist know, when playing through an electric hollow body guitar at volume, feedback can occur at the most inopportune time. This painting is my vision of what that feedback can look like. The Guild X500 in the painting is being subjected to a terrible attack.

            Title:           Melodic Event Horizon

            Size:            H 40″ x W 30″

Medium:   Oil on Canvas. Also available as Limited Edition Giclee on Canvas.

           Edition:     200

Like the event horizon of a black hole, many things can happen. In this case, our Altec speaker emits color rings representing musical sound waves, creating an abstract melody, based on the 12 tone music and color scales.

            Title:           Tie One On

            Size:            H 18″ x W 24″

Medium:   Oil on Canvas. Also available as Limited Edition Giclee on Canvas.

           Edition:     200

It’s been a hard day at the job… No appreciation for your efforts… Feeling overworked and ignored… Finally it’s 5:00!!! Let’s go home and “Tie One On.”
